トーストマスターズとは
トーストマスターズ・インターナショナルは、優れたコミュニケーターそしてリーダーになるためのノウハウを教え、会員同士が切磋琢磨する場を作る非営利のスピーチ・クラブです。カリフォルニアで８０年前に発足し、 現在、世界各国で２０万人の会員が所属しています。カナダ国境からフェデラルウェイまでのピュージェットサウンド地区では、２０００人程の会員が約１２５のクラブにおいてスピーチの練習をしています。 会員の人種、職業、年齢はさまざまです。英語を母国語とする人もそうでない人も、スピーチは英語で行っています。
スピーチスキルの必要性
日常生活でスピーチをする機会がない、という方もあることでしょう。しかし、「コミュニケーション」は１００人の聴衆に対して話すのも、 就職の面接官一人を相手に話すのも、基本的には同じテクニックを使うのです。アメリカでは小学校からスピーチがカリキュラムに組まれており、 この土地でアメリカ人と伍していくためには不可欠のスキルといえます。母国語が日本語であっても、長く日本を離れているうちに、 きちんとした日本語を話すことが難しくなってきたと感じることがあるものです。社会人になる前にアメリカに来たため敬語に自信がないという方もいるかもしれません。 バイリンガル・トーストマスターズでは英語だけでなく日本語でのスピーチの練習も行います。英語は少々心もとないという方も、 日本語のスピーチの批評をすることでクラブに貢献することができます。

What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization in which members develop their communication and leadership skills in a mutually supportive and positive learning environment. Originally established in California in 1924, Toastmasters currently has 200,000 members worldwide. About 2,000 members practice public speaking and leadership in approximately 125 individual clubs in the Puget Sound region from the Canadian border in the north to Federal Way in the south ("District 2"). Members come from all walks of life, and are of diverse ethnic backgrounds and ages. Native and non-native speakers of English alike generally practice speaking in English.
The Need for Speaking Skills
You might be thinking, "I don't usually speak before audiences, so what's in it for me?" The communication skills needed to address a group of 100 people are essentially the same as those that will serve you well in one-on-one dealings with others. Good speaking skills and the confidence they bring open the doors to more effective participation in life.
Even if your first language is Japanese, you might find that your Japanese speaking skills have degraded due to your long-term stay outside Japan. Or perhaps you are not quite comfortable with formal Japanese ("keigo"). You can practice speaking in Japanese as well as in English at this club. Even those uncomfortable speaking in English can contribute by evaluating speeches in Japanese.
