乾杯トーストマスターズについて
『乾杯』クラブは、２００５年２月５日に発足し、会員も２０人を超え、同年３月１４日にはトーストマスターズ・インターナショナルより正式のクラブとして認定を受けました。 クラブの名前は、toastmasterを英和辞典でひくと最初に出てくる言葉「乾杯の音頭をとる人」に由来します。さまざまな名前が候補に挙がった中から投票で選ばれました。
『乾杯』クラブは、日英バイリンガル・クラブとして、全国でもめずらしい存在です。北米のトーストマスターズの中で、日英バイリンガル・クラブは、現在のところ『乾杯』のほかにはニューヨークとサンフランシスコにしかありません。 発足時には２０人程度であった会員は２００７年夏には３０人近くまで増え会員は、会社員、自営業、学生、主婦や定年退職者といったあらゆる人で構成されています。英語が外国語であるという会員が今のところほとんど過半数ですが、日本語が外国語であるという会員もまた増えています。 また、トーストマスターズは『乾杯』が初めて、という会員もいれば、他のトーストマスターズ・クラブに現在参加している、あるいは過去に参加したことがある経験豊かな会員も２５％います。従来の英語のみのクラブでは得られないものを『乾杯』クラブに見たのです。
トーストマスターズ・クラブは、先生と生徒がいる「クラス」ではありません。２０人程度の会員が、交代でスピーチをしたり批評 (Evaluation)をしたりして、互いの向上を助け合う仲間です。 『乾杯』では、日本語と英語の両方でスピーチやミーティングを行います。英語だけのミーティングについていくのが不安な方も、また日本語を母国語としないが日本語でスピーチができるようになりたいという方も、私たちのバイリンガル・トーストマスターズなら気軽に始めることができます。
About Our Club
Kanpai held its first meeting on February 5, 2005 and gained 20 members — enough members to become a chartered club of Toastmasters International — on March 14th, 2005. The club name comes from the Japanese word "kanpai," which you say in Japanese when raising your glass in a toast. The name was chosen by a vote from among dozens of other possibilities.
Being a Japanese-English bilingual club, Kanpai occupies a unique position in the United States. Besides Kanpai, the only other Japanese-English Toastmasters clubs in North America at this time are in New York and San Francisco. From its founding with about 20 members, Kanpai had grown to almost 30 members by summer 2007. Members come from many walks of life: company employees, self-employed, students, homemakers and retirees. Most speak English as a Second Language but our number of speakers of Japanese as a Second Language is growing. Some members of Kanpai are completely new to Toastmasters, but others are current or former members of "English-only" Toastmasters clubs who want to add some wasabi to their communication and leadership training.
Toastmasters clubs are not "classes" involving teachers and students. Clubs are groups of people who help each other improve by taking turns giving speeches and evaluations. At this club, meetings and speeches are conducted in both in English and Japanese. Japanese who are concerned about taking part in English-only meetings and non-native speakers of Japanese who want to build their Japanese speaking skills can get started speaking in the casual atmosphere of our bilingual meetings.
